WHAT DOES THE ELECTRICAL PANEL DO?

Your electrical panel is an important part of your business or home's power distribution system. It is designed to provide the proper amount of power to each circuit and to stop that power if a fault or overload occurs in order to prevent an electric fire from happening. When properly installed and utilized, it supplies power to your lights, HVAC systems, appliances, and other electrical devices.

I HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PANEL, WHY UPGRADE?

Normally, electric panels should be replaced every 25 to 40 years. How old is your panel? If your business building or home is over 30 years old, it's likely that new circuits have been added to the ones the panel was originally planned to hold. Also, well-meaning friends, family or "part-time" electricians may have added dual wires to a single breaker, a process known as double-tapping, in order to "squeeze in" an extra circuit for electricity needed in a new location or for a new appliance (hot tub, pool, etc.). Both of these can increases your risk of arc flashes and electrical fires.

If you do have a home that is more than 15 years old, you may only have a 100 amp electrical panel. While sufficient at the time it was installed, with all the new electrical devices and appliances today, it may not have the power you really need. Most new homes and panel upgrades will use a 200 amp electrical panel. For businesses, even more power may be required, depending on the type of business and equipment you use.

Also, you want to upgrade if you are adding on to your business or home (i.e. additional room or rooms), or just adding new equipment, such as work machinery, a hot tub, or a pool. Any of these are likely to require a panel upgrade to properly provide for the needed electrical circuits.

Additionally, if your electrical panel is maxed out, you could be depriving your electrical equipment with the correct power they need to operate, which can cause surges, and damage your valuable electronics, such at televisions, computers and the "brain" systems in stoves, refrigerators, etc. If your lights dim, or you hear a buzz or hum when your HVAC, vacuum cleaner or another high power device starts, you may be overloading the circuit or even overloading your panel. If you are overloading the panel, you definately should consider an upgrade.
